Cingular vs Verizon

Category: accessible Devices

Ok, wasn't fully sure where to put this topic, but I figured it has to do with accessibility. I'm debating between these 2 cell companies. I have verizon now and my contract is up in Summer. Sure verizon has the lg phones that are farely accessible right out of the box, but it ends there. I don't feel like verizon is giving any attention to their visually impaired blind customers. Cingular offers the special for the nokia phones that work with talks. Don't they have an department for accessibility issues? They also have this voice connect thing, that is free to qualifying customers. What do y'all think? Any input or advice? Who is with either of these companies? Thanks all! In a way, it is unfortunate that I've been with verizon wireless for over 4 years, because it makes me a bit more nervous making a change.

Cingular probably would be your best bet, though i wouldn't recommend getting talks through them directly.

Thank you. Are you with Cingular then? Good coverage? Have you tried this voice connect? I only saw a glimps; it is fun!

Good morning Grape. I have been using cingular from the time it was first made available in the NY/NJ area. There buying of AT&T has turned them in to an excellent network which in my opinion is comparible to verizon. What you will find with both services is that they work well in most areas. it's little things that might bug you such as you might find that cingular works in a building where verizon never did and verizon works in a building where cingular doesn't. This of course has to do with placement of towers and many other variables. AS an adaptive tech instructor I travel all around the state of New Jersey. I have been extremely satisfied with cingular's performance. I need the phone to work and it does. I have associates who are quite pleased with Verizon as well. Cingular does permit a 14 day trial and I would suggest that you consider leaving your Verizon phone active, buying a cingular phone and trying them both in the areas that are important for you to have coverage. If cingular works then make the change. There tech support and customer service are excellent and I have never had a billing problem. Also, they offer up to 15 dollars of directory assistance credit each month. I don't know verizon's current policy on this. I have an associate who has the nokia 6620 with Talks from cingular and loves it. One thing to note is that cingular is not offering the latest talks version and I don't know why. Have a great day.

I have cingular as well and haven't had much trouble with them. My 6620 broke 6 months after I got it and they sent me a new one with a new talks serial code. I realize they don't ship the latest version of talks but it isn't to difficult to do it on your own. Another friend of mine had a lot of trouble with there 6620 and the 2.54 version of talks. Cingular worked with her and finnaly sent her a 6682. Why they haven't started using this phone instead of the 6620 is anyones guess. But over-all this talks enabled phone rocks, pluss if you buy talks from them you can get the blind waver and with a 2 year contract you get refunded the 199 for talks in 30 days. The price for talks from other dealers is 299.

I don't like cingular as their signal sucks and you always have dropped calls or at least that's the way with all of my friends, how I've never had much of a problem with verizon phones, yes accessibility is an issue, but I also look at the call reception.

A thought about the dropped calls: What many carriers won't tell you is that some phones worke better then others. I use a Motorola v551 and don't have that problem.Other's use LG phones on Cingular and do. The treo pda phone is one that dropps calls all the time. Now of course how do you get the right phone? Don't know. Trial and error I guess. I had one samsung that had bad reception and one that's excellent so who knows. One very helpful website is phonescoop.com where you can type in the phone you are considering and see specks and also reviews by users. This is very helpful. Epinions.com is another good place although not geared specificly twards cell phones has good reviews. I use phonescoop all the time to look up specks and reviews.

Woof, thanks for the website; it's brilliant! I've been flipping back and forth verizon's website and cingular's, then over to phonescoop. I still don't know which company I'll choose, but it's interesting to read about the phones.

I was with Verizon for four years and just switched to Cingular last month. I got the Nokia 6682 so that I could install TALKS. So far, I haven't had any problems with Cingular. They seem much more willing to work with you and answer questions honestly than Verizon did.
